Ken Lyons Photography | Explore London 2014 Workshop Itinerary

Explore London 2014 Workshop & Tour

Day / Date Activities
Friday 19 Sept Friday night we'll all meet in the workshop hotel restaurant for a welcome dinner, where we can meet one another and get to know a little about each other in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
Saturday 20 Sept

Saturday morning will be spent in the classroom where we'll discuss the basics of street and travel photography. Everyone will have the opportunity to tell the group a little about themselves and their photographic background. There will be presentations and if required some basic camera instruction to ensure everyone gets the very best images they can.

After the classroom session we'll head to Borough Market to practice our street-photography skills. If you're hungry you can buy lunch from one of the many food vendors at the market. We'll also be visiting nearby Southwark Cathedral where William Shakespeare was a parishioner for several years. We'll be making images of the building from the outside as well as inside the cathedral. This will be a chance to practice detail and architectural photography.

After an early dinner we'll head out to the area around Westminster Bridge where we'll capture Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) and the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament) as the sun sets behind them, before moving to the opposite side of the River Thames where we can capture images of the London Eye lit up against the night sky.

Sunday 21 Sept

After breakfast we'll begin our walk along the banks of the River Thames where we'll get to practice more street photography. Queens Walk on South Bank is a hive of activity, with an active skatepark, a variety of entertainers, a carousel and lot's of people. We'll also move away from the river for a side-journey to the nearby Leake Street tunnel, which is sometimes called the "Banksy Tunnel" and is a great place to photograph street art & graffiti.

After a bite to eat for lunch we'll continue our journey along the banks of the Thames, criss-crossing the bridges and ending our day at Tower Bridge.

We'll be on our feet a lot today, so after we finish at Tower Bridge we'll hop on the London Underground and make our way back to the hotel where we can rest up before dinner. The evening is then yours to rest or maybe head out on your own for some more night photography.

Monday 22 Sept

Monday morning will be spent in the classroom again. Ken will give a presentation on his Adobe Photoshop Lightroom workflow, including editing (picking / culling) and post-processing (developing) images.

After the morning presentation we'll make our way to The Embankment where we'll board our boat for a relaxing Thames River Lunch Cruise, enjoying great food as we travel along the river passing many historic sites.

After lunch we'll take the London Underground to The Monument which commemorates the Great Fire of London (1666). From there we'll walk to Leadenhall Market where we can spend more time practising our street-photography in this beautiful setting. We'll then make our way to Trinity Square Gardens which commemorates the Merchant Navy.

Dinner today will be at your own expense. There will be an optional night photography shoot tonight at the nearby Tower Bridge. For those that don't wish to participate in the night shoot, the evening will be yours - maybe time to edit and process some of the images you've captured so far!

Tuesday 23 Sept

This morning we'll be hopping on the London Underground again and starting our photography in Chinatown. From there we'll head up to Carnaby Street then Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square before making our way along Whitehall and the Birdcage Walk through St James's Park to Buckingham Palace. There will be plenty of opportunity for street-photography this morning, as well as capturing images of more iconic London locations.

After finishing at Buckingham Palace, it's back on the Underground and we'll make our way to the Tower of London where you'll have two to three hours to visit the various buildings and exhibitions. Expect to make many photographs here! Entrance is included in the workshop cost. We'll then make our way to Tower Bridge where we'll go up into the tower and have access to the walkways above the river. This is a great vantage point for images of the Tower of London as well as along the river on both sides of the bridge.

Tonight we'll have dinner at the nearby Anchor Bankside Hotel, which is famous as the location diarist Samuel Pepys sat and watched the Great Fire of London as it burned on the other side of the Thames in 1666. It's also thought that William Shakespeare enjoyed an ale or two here!

Wednesday 24 Sept

After breakfast today we'll make the short walk from the hotel to Westminster Bridge where we can photograph Elizabeth Tower, the Palace of Westminster and of course the bridge itself. We'll be making our way over the bridge where we'll be able to get images of more of the famous landmarks - Jewel House, Westminster Cathedral, Westminster School, Buckingham Palace, St James's Palace and ending our morning at Piccadilly and Burlington Arcades.

This afternoon will be taken up with editing and post-processing your images. There will also be a one on one critique session where we'll go through a selection of your images and discuss what worked, what didn't and how to improve them.

Tonight we'll all get together again for a final dinner and a night of enjoying new friendships before saying goodbye.

Thursday 25 Sept Thursday morning will be the official check-out of the hotel as we leave and make our way to our next adventure!
